CAÑO NEGRO WILDLIFE REFUGE (Kayak Through the Village) |
Covering almost 10,000 hectares, this refuge protects one of the most important humid areas of the country and has international importance at it serves as a wintering site for migrant waterfowl as well as for resident wetland species, some at risk of extinction.
The lake and surrounding marsh areas of Caño Negro constitute a habitat of great importance for a variety of species of fauna and flora, many of them are unique and subject to extinction. |
This area plus the wetlands of lake Nicaragua have become one of the most important marshlands of mesoamerica. This refuge is an important source of food for many aquatic birds. Here there are many species of animals and plants not found elsewhere, and a large population of birds.
We will drive on a comfortable tour van for approximately two hours and half to the place (Bridge) that we start our river trip. As you travel on the road, you will enjoy relaxing scenery of the countryside of this important area of the Northern Zone. |
We will take a small rest and later on proceed to board a kayak to start our journey by navigating the Rio Frio upstream heading from north to south. Here you will experience one of nature’s most beautiful wildlife displays. While kayaking along the river, you most likely will encounter a great variety of birds, flora, mammals, and reptiles. |
Among the many birds are Wood Stork, White Ibis, Anhinga, Glossy Ibis, and Black-bellied Whistling Duck. Some of the mammals and reptiles that live in the refuge include three species of monkeys, sloths, tapirs, ocelots, long-nosed bats, caimans, and the luminescent green Emerald Basilisks. |
As you kayak along the river shores, our tour guide will provide you with relevant information about the magnificent marshlands of Caño Negro and its inhabitants.
On the riverbanks, we will enjoy a delicious Costa Rica styled lunch. After lunch, we will proceed to reach the boundary of wildlife refuge and then return to Fortuna, but before heading back, we will make a short stop on the way at the tree of the iguanas. |
